    Hull High School: National Blue Ribbon School

    What an amazing day!  We started the day by hearing from the 2011 National Teacher of the Year who spoke about making connections with students and taking advantage of every opportunity to make what we teach relevant to our students.  From there we went to the 2012 Nation Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Awards Luncheon.  We were joined by Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Tyrell, as well as three members of the Hull School Committee - David Twombly, Marianne Harte and Stephanie Peters.  After a question and answer session with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and a great lunch, it was time to start handing out the awards.  I can't tell you how great it was to stand with HHS teacher Sheila Blair and National Blue Ribbons School Director Aba Kumi and hold Hull High School's Blue Ribbon plaque.

    Shelia and I will be back tomorrow (in time for parent conferences!) and are planning an official flag raising next week.  Everyone in the Hull High School community - students, teachers, staff members, administrators, parents and supporters should be so proud tonight.  HHS is one of the best high schools in the country and we now have the plaque and flag to prove it!

    Have a great night!

    Hello From Washington DC!

    It was a beautiful day here in Washington DC, but Sheila Blair and I spent most of it inside attending fantastic workshops.  We heard from Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan's Chief of Staff about Department of Education initiatives.  We had the opportunity to speak to Department of Education staff members about what we see as challenges facing schools across the country.  The highlight of the day was spending time with other Blue Ribbon Schools principals and teachers in roundtable discussions groups listening to what other schools have done to improve the education of their students.  Shelia and I will not only be bringing home our Blue Ribbon flag, but will also be bringing back lots of ideas as to how Hull High School can just keep getting better!!

    The awards ceremony is at noontime tomorrow.  It is being streamed live starting tomorrow at noon at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/education-department if you are interested in watching.  We will post pictures tomorrow and let you know about our plans for next week, when we raise our Blue Ribbon flag outside Hull High School for the first time.

    I'll end with a quote from Frederick Douglass that I heard today.  It really spoke to me about why we do what we do every single day.

    "It is easier to to build strong children then to repair broken men."

    Have a great night!

    Term 1 Report Card Letter

    November 9, 2012

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

    When you get this letter and report card, I will be down in Washington D.C. with Sheila Blair attending the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Awards Ceremony and workshops on school improvement.  I truly wish that I could bring our entire school community down there with me, as this award belongs to all of us.  The 2012 Blue Ribbon flag with be flown proudly in front of our school as a testament to the hard work, dedication and support of our students, teachers, staff and families.

    Report Cards
    Enclosed in this mailing is your student’s term one report card. Almost one-third of our students earned a spot on the honor roll this term.  I hope that your student is one of them!  Please remember that this is just a portion of your student’s final grade in his/her classes.  So, if you and your student are not pleased with this grade, encourage your student to speak to the teacher, stay for extra help, just put in a bit more effort and, hopefully, next term that grade will improve.

    This is the last time that we will mail report cards to the parents and guardians of all our students.  At the end of the second term, we will make report cards available on the Aspen system.  If you would still like to have a hard copy mailed to you, please contact Lisa Dalton at ldalton@town.hull.ma.us or at 781-925-3000 x. 1106 and she will put your name on a list of people who would like their child’s report card mailed.  Please know that report cards will be posted several days before they are mailed.

    Aspen
    Speaking of the Aspen system, if you have looked at it this week you will have noticed that there have been some additions.  You can now:
    ·         Use the calendar feature to see when your child has homework or upcoming assessments in his/her classes;
    ·         See if your child turned in his/her homework, and;
    ·         See the grades that your child has earned on these assessments.
    If you have any problems logging in or seeing this information, please contact Lisa Dalton and she will do her best to assist you within 24 hours.

    Parent / Teacher Conferences
    Parent conferences are scheduled for November 15th from 1:10 PM until 3:10 PM and November 19th from 6 PM until 9 PM.  To set up an appointment, please email Fran Troy at ftroy@town.hull.ma.us .  In your email, please let Fran know which teachers you would like to meet.  If you do not have access to email, please call Fran at 781-925-3000 x.1112.  Requests for appointments will be accepted starting November 9th and will be handled in the order in which they are received.

    Mr. Lidington
    As many of you know, Mr. John Lidington recently underwent heart surgery.  Being the incredibly dedicated teacher that he is, Mr. Lidington has been sending work in for his students and communicating with us almost daily.  We wish him a very speedy recovery and look forward to having him back at HHS as soon as he is able.

    HHS Students Experience the 2012 Election

    HHS Students Experience the 2012 Election

    On Monday, members of Mr. MacKenzie's senior government classes held a debate during an all school assembly in the auditorium.  Mr. MacKenzie's students spent two weeks researching the pros and cons of this year's ballot questions.  They also studied the platforms of Scott Brown, Elizabeth Warren, Mitt Romney, and Barack Obama.

    During the debate over 20 students were allowed to demonstrate their knowledge of the issues at the heart of the2012 election in Massachusetts.  Many students served as content experts, studying one side of a ballot question or representing a candidates view on a specific hot-button issue.  Anna Bregoli served as the moderator of the event and did a fantastic job running the hour long program.

    Following the debate, the classes hosted a mock election, which was held during all three lunches.  The students received the results before they left school on Monday.  We are all looking forward to see how closely tonight's results mirror those that we compiled here at HHS.

    Congratulations to Mr. MacKenzie and his students for making Monday a special day for our whole school community.

    Barack Obama (D) 70%

Certain elite skills such as express up to heel stretches, layouts in the tumbling, and braced flips in the pyramid all hit, earning them a qualifying score. The girls will compete again this Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Dartmouth High School.

    Start times will be available later this week at this link:  http://schedules.schedulestar.com/Hull-High-School-Hull-MA/day/11-05-2012/
