Southeastern District MMEA (Massachusetts Music Educators Association)

On November 23rd two Hull High School students, Allie Rosembaum and Eric Daniels, auditioned for a seat in the Chorus in this year’s Southeastern Senior District Festival.   It has been several years since any student from Hull High School has auditioned for this festival.  The two students were competing against hundreds of other vocalists from Randolph to the Cape.  This was Allie’s first festival audition and Eric’s second.  We congratulate both students for bringing Hull’s music program back to the Senior District level.  Both students scored very well, and we are pleased to tell you that Eric Daniel’s will be a part of the tenor section in this year’s Senior District festival at the beginning of January.  Eric also received an All-State recommendation to audition for the All-State Chorus at the end of January.  We wish him good luck at that audition.

A Letter from Mr. Devine

November 12, 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

One year ago today, I was in Washington DC to receive Hull High School's National Blue Ribbon of Excellence.  I was so proud to be a part of Hull High School that day and I still am today.  Our students are still accomplishing great things.  Did you read about Christian Fuda's art?  How about Kevin DeCoste being named a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student?  How about the 14 students named by the College Board as AP Scholars?  Last week I listened to the cast of Shrek: The Musical singing the finale and I was blown away.  Come into the office and look at the Freedom Tree created by Ms. Held's and Mr. Fuller's classes.  These are just a few of the great things happening at Hull High School.  Listed below are some more great things and also ideas to help you know more about what is going on here at our school.

Report Cards

For the first time, most of you received your student's report card electronically on the Aspen system.  This is a huge step forward for our school, as it allows you to receive report cards faster and in a less expensive and more environmentally-friendly way.  This is also how you will receive progress reports.  Hopefully you have been monitoring your student's progress this year on Aspen and so the grades on the report card should not have come as a surprise.  However, if you have any concerns about your child's progress or grades, please do not hesitate to contact the teacher.

Parent Communication

We strongly encourage you to follow our blog, like us on facebook and/or follow us on twitter.  The use of these electronic mediums will be the primary way that we will communicate information to families.  You may also have noticed that the daily announcements given to students are also posted on Aspen.  We will also continue to use Connect Ed phone calls to inform you when your student is marked absent and of special events here at HHS.  Never before have we been able to communicate with parents so quickly and efficiently and we sincerely hope that you avail yourselves of the communication tools.  If you have any suggestions for other ways that we can communicate with families, please do not hesitate to email those suggestions to me.

School Council

We had our first School Council meeting last month and our second meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 8th at 6 PM in the library.  Your elected representatives are: Brian Lanner, Michelle Proude, Anna Karski, Annemarie Dunn and Bill Tramontana.  However, all parents are invited to join us at any meeting and share your concerns, help us look at new ways to improve our school and to have a say on matters that affect your student.  I hope to see you there.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Just a reminder that Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, November 13th from 1:20PM to 3:10PM and Monday, November 18th from 5:30PM to 8:30PM.  To set up appointments please email Fran Troy at ftroy@town.hull.ma.us.  In your email please let Fran know which day you would like to book appointments and which teachers you would like to meet.  If you do not have access to email, please call Fran at 781-925-3000 x1112.  Requests for appointments will be handled in the order in which they are received.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to meet with your student’s teachers.

Scores

As you may have read in The Hull Times a few weeks ago, last year saw a dip in our MCAS and SAT scores.  Please know that this is something that I and all members of our faculty and staff take very seriously.  We have been "crunching the numbers" and examining the data to implement new strategies to get these scores back up to where they belong.  Some things that we have already started are:

·         SAT Questions of the Day being used as activators in math and English classes;

·         SAT vocabulary being taught in all sophomore, junior and senior English classes;

·         A mini-SAT prep course being created by our guidance counselors to help teach juniors how to take the SAT;

·         Aligning our curriculum to the new Massachusetts standards in math and English;

·         Examining our students' areas of strengths and weaknesses on the MCAS and adjusting instruction to target those weaknesses, and;

·         Providing additional support to those students who did not do well on previous MCAS exams.

As I said to the Hull School Committee, I strongly believe that this decrease in scores is an aberration and NOT the start of a trend, as our MCAS and SAT scores have been steadily climbing over the past 8 years.  I do however take any dip seriously and am committed to doing what we can to get our scores where they need to be.  On a bright note, I was talking to a friend who is a mathematics teacher in a neighboring community and I told her that 66% of our students scored Advanced on the 10th grade mathematics MCAS.  Her response was, “WOW!  That’s a lot better than we did!”

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our school and all of its curricular and co-curricular programs.  I wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving and a joyous start to the holiday season.

Sincerely,

Michael F. Devine

Principal

Hull High School

Freshmen Newsletter (November)

Freshmen Team Presents Their First Monthly Newsletter

As part of Hull High School's "Freshmen Experience Program",
the freshmen teachers at HHS have been working together in their professional learning communities to enhance parent-teacher communication for our 9th graders.  One of their newest efforts is a monthly newsletter, which will showcase the work being done in 9th grade classes around the building.  It is an excellent tool to get parents brushed up on what is going on in each classroom, but also a way to showcase the outstanding efforts of our 9th grade students.

We want to thank the freshmen team for putting this together and hope it becomes another tool, which increases parent involvement and awareness at HHS.

Student Artwork and Poetry "Grows" in the HHS Main Office

The Survivor Tree at HHS

Hull High School Students Work Across the Curriculum to Remember September 11, 2001

If you walk into the HHS main office, you will undoubtedly notice some new student artwork on display.  What makes this artwork different from other artwork around the building is that the "Survivor Tree" is a cross-curricular effort between art students and English students.

The project is a tribute to the stories of strength, hope, courage, and survival, which are associated with the events of September 11, 2001.  It is a unique mixture of drawing, painting, sculpture, and poetry, which you will certainly want to see.  Below the next photo you will find a description of the project provided by the project's coordinator, Ms. Amanda Held.

We want to thank both Ms. Held and Mr. Fuller for their work on this project.  We also want to congratulate the students artists and poets on a job well done.

Some of the student artists who made the Survivor Tree possible.

THE COLLABORATIVE SURVIVOR TREE PROJECT:
Ms. Held’s Introduction to Art I Classes and Mr. Fuller’s English classes

For this project, we created our own Survivor Tree as a means to honor and remember all those stories of strength, courage, hope and survival.  The story of the Survivor Tree speaks to the idea that out of all the carnage and destruction that occurred on that day, life emerges and goes on.  We must always remember these stories and always be inspired.  That is what keeps us strong and that is what keeps us going.

This is the basis for our own Survivor Tree.  Student’s in Ms. Held’s art classes were challenged to think about WHAT INSPIRES YOU?  Each student created a two-sided leaf for our tree.   On one side is their name and 3-5 words to describe what inspires them.  On the second side, they illustrated these words of inspiration.  Our leaves were created from a variety of materials.

In addition to our leaves, students in Mr. Fuller’s freshman English classes wrote Haiku’s that were added to the trunk of the tree.  These Haiku’s describe the student’s thoughts regarding the events of September 11th and/or what inspires them.

In the end, all of our artwork and writing came together on the tree to symbolize the unity of our country on this tragic day.  Our Survivor Tree now serves as a permanent reminder to never lose hope and always be inspired.  We are strong and we are united!

Tree trunk and fence created by Senior Intern; Christian Fuda

Thank you to everyone who helped bring our tree to life!!!

Keeping Our Children Safe

There have been recent incidents of children being approached by strangers offering them rides.  One such incident happened yesterday afternoon.

These incidents serve as reminders that students and parents should be diligent when waiting for the bus, going to and from school, and be wary of strangers in general.

We ask you to remind your child that if approached by a stranger immediately bring it to the attention of their parents, school officials or the police.

All students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 have been reminded of ways to stay safe while in the community.

Your children’s safety is always our utmost concern.

PSAT Testing Tomorrow, School for Seniors begins at 10:30

PSAT and ReadiStep Testing

Wednesday, October 16th @HHS

On Wednesday all students in grades 9-11 will sit for College Board testing from 7:25 - 10:45 in the morning.  All freshmen will be taking the College Board's ReadiStep Test, which is the age appropriate assessment to prepare students for the SAT.  During the same testing period, all sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT.  These tests are provided free of charge to all HHS students and they represent a great opportunity for all of our students to become more proficient on the SAT.

Seniors will not be in school on Wednesday morning.  They will report to the gymnasium at 10:30 on Wednesday.  They will sit for their senior class photo at that time before being dismissed to classes at 10:45.

The "school day" will begin at 10:45 and all students will attend their D, E, F, and G period classes.  Lunch will be served.

All students will need calculators for their test and we have a limited supply to lend.  So please be sure your student comes to the test prepared to do their best.

A Request from the PTO

First of all, let me say “Thank You.”  With town and school budgets struggling, the parents and members of the Hull community have enabled the Hull PTO to provide academic and co-curricular opportunities for the children.  Thanks to your participation in our events, fundraisers, and activities, the Hull PTO is able to be a support system to the students and teachers of our community.  For that, we are grateful and want you to know that your efforts do not go unnoticed.

The good news is we are providing thousands of dollars in support to the school system to ensure important programs and projects are available.  While we cannot list them all, below is a sample of the projects the PTO is proud to have supported this past school year:

Arts Alive Day                                                   Hull High School Advisory Day
Huntington Theater Field Trips                          Jacobs Express Day
Jacobs Service Week Visit to Senior Center          Little Mermaid Production
Museum of Science School Program                   Plimouth Plantation Field Trip
Power of One Anti-Bullying Program                 Teacher Appreciation Meals
Turkey Trot                                                       Amelia Earnhardt Historical Perspectives Show
Captain John’s Floating Classroom Trip             Baseball Literature Trip to Fenway Park
Franklin Park Field Trip                                     Grad Night

These great opportunities would not be available without your support.  As we head into the 2013 – 2014 school year, we need your help to ensure we can continue to provide great learning opportunities for the kids of Hull.  In recent years, demand for support from the PTO has grown, while fundraising has been increasingly difficult, leaving us with more requests and fewer resources.  To ensure we can help make these and many more programs available, we are asking for your support.  Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Hull PTO as we head back to school.

Your gift of $20, $50, $100, or more will help ensure the children of Hull continue to learn and grow, and give back to this great community in which we live.  To make your gift, please send your check made out to the Hull PTO, P.O. Box 56, Hull, MA 02045 or make a donation online at www.hullpto.org

Thank you for all that you do for the children of Hull.  Your commitment is greatly appreciated and all of us at the PTO know that we could not do any of this without you.

With Warm Appreciation,

Melissa Harper, Hull PTO Treasurer
