HHS visits the Institue of Contemporary Art

On Thursday, December 7th, students in all the art classes, grades 9-12,  attended a field trip to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston (ICA).  After arriving at the ICA by boat, students had a guided tour with the theme of Artist as Storyteller and worked in the art lab to create Memory Boards. Students had a bit of time to explore the galleries on their own and visit the gift shop before wrapping up the day.

CONGRATULATIONS LIZ LONDERGAN!!!

Hull High Schools Girls Basketball Coach Liz Londergan has been awarded the Paul Sargent Award. Liz will be presented with the Award prior to the start of the girls basketball game on Friday December 15th at 6:30pm. This is a very prestigious award and Liz is a very worthy recipient! The award Liz is receiving is the Paul Sargent Award. It is given to one coach, either boy's or girl's, each year who the referees of Board 54 believes best exemplifies the qualities of what a coach should be in terms of sportsmanship, the ability to coach (teach) their players about basketball and make them better people for later in life as well as everything else that exemplifies what a coach should be. This is Board 54's coach of the year award.

Sincerely,
Richard Lambert
President
Board 54

Again, the Award Presentation will be Friday December 15th prior to the start of the Girls Varsity Basketball Game vs North Quincy, the game is scheduled for 6:30pm. I hope everyone can be in the gym at Hull High School to Honor and Support Liz for this outstanding accomplishment!!

HULL HIGH SCHOOL BAND UPDATES

Senior District Music Festival Auditions

The Senior District Music Festival Auditions were held in Wrentham at King Philip Regional High School on Saturday November 18.  Hull High School sent three of their students, Juniors Sean Healey (trumpet and French horn) and Jimmy Barone (trumpet) and Freshman Maeve Donohue (trumpet).  All three of them audition regularly for the state and local music festivals that are held each year and all three of them have participated one or both of the festivals.  This year was Maeve’s year as she scored high enough to earn a seat in the Senior District Music Festival.  Hull has not had a student in this festival for over 20 years.  Congratulations Maeve!

Hull High School Band Performs at the Dunkin Donuts Center

On November 19th the High School Band traveled to Providence, RI to attend a Providence Bruins hockey game and perform at the two intermissions.  Twenty-seven members and several family members enjoyed the day and took home many lasting memories. For pictures and video of the event please click on the link below.  The link will only be good until December 3rd.

Thanksgiving Day Football Game

This past Thanksgiving Day the High School Band took another marching step towards becoming Marching Pirates!  This season the band members were introduced to marching on and off the field and creating formations.  The students picked up the marching basics quickly and hopefully next year we will have a traditional marching band camp one week before the school year starts.

Pictured are Drum Majors Sean Healey and Carrie Eleuteri directing the Band; videos of the band can be seen on Facebook at Hull High School Music Department, video courtesy of Mary Powers

Parent Teacher Conferences

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We are currently scheduling Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Evening conferences will take place on Tuesday, November 14 from 5.30PM to 8.20PM, and afternoon conferences will be on Thursday, November 16 from 1.30PM to 3.20PM.  We hope you will take advantage of this time to see all of your students’ teachers.

Hull High School uses the online service: PTCFast.com to make signups for parent-teacher conferences more efficient.  Please enter the following web address into your browser window or go to the Hull High website for the link:

You will be brought to a website where you can select which teachers you would like to schedule conferences with. (Please check ASPEN for the teachers’ names prior to logging into PTC.Fast for conferences.)  Once you have made your selection, you will be prompted to enter the name(s) of your student(s), and to register using a valid email address.

After you complete the registration process, the website will send you an email with a link to schedule your conferences.  In some cases, it may take up to an hour to get your email, so please be patient.  You may also check your spam folder to see if the email was channeled there.

Once you receive your email follow the link to select times for your conferences. If you selected multiple teachers, you can use the left/right arrow keys to move between columns to see available appointments.  After you have made your selections, click on the “submit” button at the bottom of the screen to complete the process and receive an email confirmation.

If you find that you are unable to attend a conference you have scheduled, please return to the website to choose a different time or remove your name from the schedule.

Please call Fran Troy at 781-925-3000 x1112 if you have questions regarding
parent /teacher conference schedules.
Thank you.

ATHLETIC FACILITY OVERHAUL DAY

On Sunday November 5th volunteers are needed to help spruce up the HHS Athletic Facilities. The projects include weed whacking around all structures, placing equipment in proper areas, picking up all trash (especially under bleaches), cleaning press box and cleaning out and organizing athletic storage rooms in gymnasium. We will begin at 10:00am, the more help we have the faster it will go. We need as many weed whackers as possible. The athletic fields are viewed by hundreds of people on a daily basis and they need to look as good as possible. The community needs to know we care about our facilities. I hope to see many of you Sunday morning and THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Re: Hull High School Theatre Arts’ Fall Include The Diary of Anne Frank and Annual Rake & Take Fundraiser

(HULL) – On November 3rd & 4th, Hull High School Theatre Arts proudly presents The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, newly revised by Wendy Kesselman.

Curtain time is 7:30pm with an additional 2pm matinee on Saturday.  Performed at the Joseph C. Doniger Auditorium at Hull High School, 180 Main St., Hull.  Tickets are $10 for reserved seating ($8 for Seniors and Students) when purchased in advance, and $12 ($10 for Seniors and Students) when purchased at the door.  Tickets can be purchased in advance online only at https://tinyurl.com/HHSTATix-18.  Group rates are available by calling 781-925-8001.

Last spring, Jim Sullivan, Director of Theatre Arts chose this show after a student told him of some anti-Semitic comments that were made in her classroom.  The student confided that she wasn’t so much upset by the words, and despite being reassured by the action taken by her teacher and administration, she felt that our country was reverting back to a time where such acts were becoming more common place and people are feeling emboldened to voice their prejudices and bigotry.  Said Sullivan, “I knew right then we had to do this show.  I wanted to show the students that theatre is a vehicle of expression that can promote dialogue in their school and community.  The incidents this past summer in Charlottesville and throughout the country reaffirmed the need to remind people of this story and how it relates to the world today.”

The Diary of Anne Frank was first written by Hollywood screen writers Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett in 1955 based on the book Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.  It won 3 Tony Awards including Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.  In 1997, Wendy Kesselman adapted the show for a Broadway revival.  Kessleman did away with a lot of the more romantic essence of the story and focused in on some of the bitter realities of the Frank and van Daan families living in hiding to escape being deported to concentration camps by the Nazis.  The powerful message of having faith in humanity despite the suffering caused by and inflicted upon so many remains.  During the Holocaust of World War II, over 6 million people perished in the concentration camps.  It is estimated that 1.5 million of them were children.  In her diary, Anne expresses her desire to go on living even after her death.  Her diary has been published in hundreds of languages and read by millions.  It is often quoted by world leaders and pioneers for peace and justice.  One of the most influential books of the 20th century, it has also been adapted into countless stage and movie versions.

“It’s an honor getting to play such an important and influential figure,” says Bianca Foresta, a freshman who plays the role of Anne Frank.  “Anne was such an eloquent writer and so determined, it’s very admirable.  The rehearsal process has been a very eye opening experience.”   “I hope families will come to watch this show together.  It’s going to be a very moving and inspiring experience,” Sullivan added.   A community talk-back is being planned for after the Saturday matinee.

Finally, Hull High School Theatre Arts will be holding its annual “Rake & Take” fundraiser on November 10, 11 & 12.  Students and adult supporters will rake your yard and haul the leaves away for a donation of $5 a bag. The proceeds of this fundraiser supports theatre arts for grades 7-12.  This fundraiser, which supplies about half of the annual funding for theatre arts, is hugely popular in Hull.  “We are completely self-funded,” Mr. Sullivan explains.  “So this is a win-win.  We get to raise money and you get a great deal on your pre-winter yard clean-up”.  There are only a limited number of spots, so be sure to sign up early.

For more information, the public is invited to call the Theatre Arts office at 781-925-8001 or email jsullivan2@town.hull.ma.us.
