Yawkey Scholars Program

Deadline:  February 12, 2016 at noon

The Yawkey Foundations' mission is to continue the charitable legacy of Tom and Jean Yawkey to make immediate, significant, and positive impacts on the quality of life of underserved children, youth and families.  The Yawkeys valued the importance of education and understood its ability to alter the course of young lives.  To honor this legacy of learning, the Yawkey Foundation Board of Trustees established the Yawkey Scholars Program in 2005 to help talented and motivated disadvantaged young people from Massachusetts and Georgetown County, South Carolina meet the rising costs of undergraduate education. Over the past ten years, the Yawkey Scholars Program has provided nearly $9 million in tuition supports to 238 Scholars as they pursue a college education. The Yawkey Scholars Program is administered by The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI).

Hull has an Audition Trend Again!

This year we had four students from the Hull Music Program audition for the state level district music festival!  In November, Junior Ricky Barone (tenor saxophonist), auditioned for the Senior Southeastern District Music Festival.  Even though he scored respectably well for his first state audition, he missed the cut off score to allow him to participate in this year's Band/Orchestra.  However, he did participate in the local Senior SEMSBA Music Festival last year as Hull's first instrumental student since the early 1980s!  We also had Freshmen, Jimmy Barone and Ben Fenelon (both trumpet players) audition last weekend for the Junior Southeastern District Music Festival.  The fourth student to audition was Robert Hunter (Jazz Piano) from Memorial Middle School.  Both Ben and Jimmy earned respectable scores for their auditions.  In fact, Jimmy scored high enough to earn him a seat in the Junior District Music Festival that will take place in March!!!  All three high school students will perform their audition pieces at this year's Winter Concert next Wednesday at 7 PM in the Joseph C. Doniger Auditorium (Hull High School).  Hope to see you there.

Meet New HHS English Teacher - Kathleen Sowyrda

Where are you from and where did you go to college?
I am from Hingham and went to Siena College for undergrad where I majored in English.  I am currently attending Lesley University in pursuit of my Masters.

What do you do for fun/hobbies?
For fun, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family. I also love to travel and am going to Australia during this April vacation.

What made you want to be a teacher?
Since I was in kindergarten I have always wanted to be a teacher.  Then in High School, I had a tough but enthusiastic Freshman English teacher who made studying English fun! She inspired me to always do my best and made me want to teach others.

How have things gone to start the school year?

Things have gone well so far this year! I love both the students and staff! They make Hull High one of the best places to teach!

Henry David Thoreau Foundation

Deadline:  February 1, 2016

Through our undergraduate scholarship program, the Henry David Thoreau Foundation identifies and supports outstanding young leaders from Massachusetts who are committed to safeguarding the environmental welfare of future generations.

Financial Support

Each year, we select a new class of Thoreau Scholars: eight to ten top-ranking high school seniors from Massachusetts who demonstrate the potential for environmental leadership and intend to pursue interdisciplinary environmental studies in college.  Each Thoreau Scholar receives a four-year scholarship of up to $20,000. In addition, Thoreau Scholars are eligible for an environmental internship stipend, which usually takes place between junior and senior year.

Support for Environmental Study

Recognizing that environmental concerns intersect with a wide range of fields—from oceanography to bioterrorism to the design of transportation systems—we encourage students to pursue curricular and professional opportunities that speak to their passions. Students ground their education in environmental studies, taking at least 25% of their coursework in subjects related to the environment. They then forge connections with other disciplines like business, economics, education, public health and policy, resulting in an interdisciplinary understanding of the environmental challenges facing society. Most Thoreau Scholars pursue one or more internships, helping them to better interpret and address environmental challenges through a variety of lenses, whether economic, historical, or socio-political.

The HDT Network

Thoreau Scholars gain access to a dynamic network of current scholars and alumni who study and work around the world, offering tremendous opportunities for professional discovery and personal growth. At our annual reception, the Thoreau Foundation gathers to celebrate the achievements of our Scholars and induct new members of the Henry David Thoreau Society for the Environment (our alumni association). Scholars and alumni also arrange informal mentoring opportunities throughout the year. Through the HDT Network, Thoreau Scholars inspire, challenge and support one another in environmental leadership.
