Mural Art Project

On Tuesday, November 17, 2015, thanks to generous funding from the Mass Cultural Council, Hull PTO and Hull Boosters, art students at Hull High School, had their first visit with visiting mural artist David Fichter to begin the planning stages for a mural that will be completed in the high school cafeteria. The goal of the 10-day residency is for all of the art students in grades 9-12 to work with artist David Fichter to create a large-scale mural (51.5 ft x 9 ft) in the high school cafeteria to beautify the space and celebrate the students’ views on community, diversity, and social change thus promoting understanding and acceptance as a value at Hull High School. After David’s initial visit, students will then work with art teacher, Amanda Davis, to create individual themed drawings that David will later combine to create one cohesive image. David will return in January to complete the mural with the students at Hull High.
Painting will take place during school time under the guidance of Mrs. Davis and muralist David Fitcher. Students will be provided the opportunity to paint  after school with the possibility of a community painting event on the weekend open to all community members. David will be invited back in May to attend Hull High School’s Festival of Harmony and Artistry for the official unveiling of the mural. Members from the community, parents, local newspapers, school committee, PTO, Boosters, MCC and legislators will be invited as well.
Through this experience, students will understand the process of creating a mural through gaining technical skills such as color mixing, working with hues and textures, and how to create a desired contrast. They will demonstrate a purposeful use of elements as well as principles of design to convey their message. Overall, each art student will walk away from this experience with an understanding of the benefits of working as a team and building a sense of unity through mural art.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

If interested in helping during the production of the mural contact Hull High School Art Teacher, Amanda Davis, at adavis@town.hull.ma.us by December 7th.

Mr. Devine's Term One Letter to Parents

November 13, 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Well, more than 25% of the 2015-2016 school-year is behind us.  The fall sports season is now over for all of our athletic teams except for our football team and repeating- South Shore League Champion cheerleaders.  Many of our seniors have already sent in their college applications and a few have even received acceptances!  All of our freshmen, sophomores and juniors have taken the PSAT and many of our seniors have taken the SAT for the very last time.  23 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society, the Mock Trial team is getting ready for another successful season, PHI is planning a mission trip this spring to the Dominican Republic, and the Art Club is preparing to grace our hallways with even more beautiful art.  All of our classes are in full-swing and I can tell you that the men and woman who are teaching your children are doing a great job of making the curriculum come alive for their students. As you can see – the fall has been busy, yet great so far here at Hull High School!

Now that the leaves are off the trees and the sun sets before 5PM, we are entering into “winter mode.”  Let’s just hope that this year’s winter is a little easier on us than last year’s!  Here are just a few of the events happening at Hull High School that I want to make sure you know about.

Term 1 Report Cards
Your student’s first term report card has been posted on Aspen.  If you are unable to access the report card, please contact Lisa Dalton here at the high school and she can make sure you have what you need to see the report card.  If you and/or your student are not pleased with any grades he/she received, please encourage your child to meet with his/her teachers to talk about how to improve that grade this term.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for the afternoon of Monday, November 16 and the evening of Wednesday, November 18th. Conferences may be scheduled by emailing Fran Troy at  ftroy@town.hull.ma.us  or by calling her at 781-925-3000 ext. 1112.  Please let Fran know which day you would like to schedule conferences and which teachers you would like to see.

Winter Sports Team Meetings
Parent-Coach-Student-Athlete Winter Team Meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, November 18th.  Ice Hockey will begin at 6:00, Girls’ Basketball at 6:30, Boys’ Basketball at 7:00 and Winter Cheerleading at 7:30.  It is mandatory that either a parent or student-athlete attend these meetings, but strongly encouraged that both are present.   For your convenience, we have scheduled these meetings on the same night as conferences.  Please be sure to let Mrs. Troy know that you will be at a Winter Team Meeting as you schedule your conferences.  Live links to register and pay online are available at www.piratesathletics.blogspot.com.

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is always a special time here at Hull High School.  On Wednesday, we have our annual rally and recognize the senior student-athletes and senior student-actors and actresses.  The Big Game is on Thanksgiving morning here at Hull High School.  The game starts at 10AM and tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.  As always, current Hull High School students are able to enter for free.  Also, we are proud to have any active-duty member of the military in uniform attend the game for free as our guest.

The Boosters’ Club Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser
The Boosters’ Club Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser will be going home with students on Friday, November 13.  On Thanksgiving, golf balls will be dumped onto the field from the top of the ladder truck.  If your golf ball lands closest to the flag on the field, you win $1000.  Second place is $500.  The golf ball that is furthest from the field wins a pair of Celtics tickets.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Quatromoni at jquatromoni@town.hull.ma.us.

Fall Play
As you may know, it has been several years since the student-actors have presented a non-musical production and they are very excited about this show.  Jim Sullivan, our new Director of Theatre Arts, and our student-actors have been working since August to prepare what is sure to be an amazing production.  This fall's production is Thornton Wilder's Our Town.  When Our Town first premiered on Broadway in 1938, the New York Times called it "The last word in experimental theatre."
Our Town is known as being one of the most widely produced shows internationally- especially in schools.  It touches on universal themes of life, love and death through a very specific lens- the daily life of the people of Grover's Corner, New Hampshire over the course of 13 years.  The show is performed without scenery, and mostly without props and will utilize the performance space in a very unique way.  The costumes will be contemporary (even though the show is based in 1901-1913). The production features students in grades 7-12.  The shows will be Friday (Dec. 11th) and Saturday (Dec. 12th) at 8pm and a matinee performance with post-show discussion will also be on Saturday, December 12th at 2pm.

Holiday Concert
Come celebrate the dedication and hard work of our High School Band students at this year’s Winter Concert.  The concert is on Wednesday, December 16 and starts at 7 PM.  This performance is free to everyone and the doors open at 6:45 PM.  We hope to see you and your family there!

This is my 7th year here at Hull High School and each year I am more and more impressed with our students.    I have no doubt that the 2015-2016 school-year will be another fantastic one for our learning community.

As we enter into the holiday season, I wish you and your families happiness, peace and joy.

Sincerely,

Michael F. Devine
Principal

Marching Pirates Return to Halftime

The Pirates are Marching Again ON the Field!

This Friday night's home game marked the return of the High School Marching Pirates to the football field.  It has been about 30 years since the last time the HHS Band had taken the field and what a performance they had.  The sound of music and presence of almost the entire 32 member band performed "Star Wars" to celebrate the upcoming movie release of The Force Awakens.  Compliments from the community included, "It's great to have the band back!"  and "The band sounded great!".  We are looking forward to continuing to grow the band program in Hull over the next number of years.  Congratulations High School Marching Pirates!

The High School Music Department can now be found on Facebook.  Like us at Hull High School Music Department and you can follow what the Music/Band Program is doing.
