Hull's Ricky Barone named to 2015 Senior SEMSBA Concert Band

2015 Senior SEMSBA Music Festival

February 3, 1959 may have been the day the music died, but February 7, 2015 marked another day that the Hull High School Band became more alive!  This was the day that sophomore tenor saxophonist, Ricky Barone, auditioned for the Senior SEMSBA (Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters Association) Concert Band.  The process started with his audition at Qualters Middle School in Mansfield.  The audition included performing three musical scales from memory, playing an audition piece (song) that he spent weeks and weeks working on, and a short sight reading musical excerpt.  It was only a few short days before we were notified of his acceptance into the 2015 Senior SEMSBA Concert Band!

The music festival was held on March 13 and 14 at Plymouth North High School.  Ricky spent an entire day, Friday, rehearsing with nearly 80 of the best South Shore high school musicians.  One of the first comments Ricky said to me during a break on Friday was that “it’s really nice to play in a big band.”  He also wished that some of our current high school Band students could have been there to share the experience with him.  Hopefully next year we will!  The next morning included a short rehearsal and lunch before the final performance.

It’s been nearly 20 years since a student musician from Hull was participating in a SEMSBA ensemble.  We are so proud of Ricky and his dedication to music and for representing Hull’s music program at this year’s Senior SEMSBA festival.

Help Support our Scholarship Fund

February 27, 2015

Dear Friend of Hull High School,

“In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reports that a "moderate" college budget for an in-state public college for the 2014–2015 academic year averaged $23,410. A “moderate” budget at a private college averaged $46,272.”

Tuition at public and private colleges is increasing by almost 9%.  Unfortunately, the amount of financial aid offered to our students has not increased at this same level.  In fact, many governmental scholarship and loan programs are giving substantially less to students, due to severe budget cuts.  Our students need your help more than ever.

I know that many of us are facing difficult financial situations in our own lives, but I am asking you to consider helping a 2015 Hull High School graduate earn a college degree.  This assistance can take several forms:

·         You can establish a scholarship in the name of loved one.  You can choose the recipient yourself or ask that the Hull High School faculty choose the recipient based on the criteria you chose.  This scholarship can be in any amount and can be endowed by you for as many years as you choose.
·         You can give a one-time financial award in any amount to a Hull High School student.  As with an established scholarship, you can choose the recipient yourself or ask that the Hull High School faculty choose the recipient based on the criteria you chose.
·         You can give any amount to the Hull High School General Scholarship Fund.  The Hull High School faculty will award several scholarships, the amount to be determined by the generosity of the Hull community.

If you have contributed before, on behalf of Hull High School, I give you my sincere thanks.  Through your generosity, you have made a significant difference in the life of a Hull High School graduate.  If you have not given before, I ask that you consider giving this year.

If you are choosing to establish a scholarship or give a one-time financial award, please contact Mrs. Lisa Dalton at Hull High School (ldalton@town.hull.ma.us or 781-925-3000 extension 1106) before May 11, 2015.  If you would like to contribute to the general scholarship fund, you may send a check, made out to Hull High School (please put “Scholarship Fund” in the memo line), to Mrs. Lisa Dalton at Hull High School.

The generosity of the people of Hull, and the surrounding communities, continues to amaze me.  Your support has allowed so many Hull High School graduates to achieve their dreams of earning a college degree. Thank you for making a difference in their lives.

With sincere thanks,

Michael F. Devine

Principal
