Course Selection on 4-26-12

Parents,

When your student arrives home this afternoon (Wednesday), they will have information regarding course selection for the 2012-2013 school year.

Please take the time to sit down with your current freshmen, sophomore, or junior and discuss their plans for the upcoming school year.  This first leg of course selection will only ask students to make selections in their core areas of study.  Elective course selection will take place once these core areas have been scheduled.

Students will receive their actual course selection forms on Thursday morning.  They will take those forms around with them during the day on Thursday and have them signed by their current teachers.  These forms will then need to be signed by a parent or guardian before they can be turned in to the main office.

Here are some things to discuss with your student concerning course selection:

1.  Is your student currently on track to graduate based on the graduation requirements listed on the course selection sheet?

2.  Is your student attempting to take on more challenging courses next year, which they do not currently meet the prerequisites for?  If so, they must fill out a waiver form for each class where the prerequisite is not met.  There will be a waiver form attached to their materials

3.  If you and your student have questions about course selection and their individual needs, please contact their guidance counselor.

Maureen Kelliher:  mkelliher@town.hull.ma.us

4.  Students will have their elective courses scheduled on a first come first serve basis.  Students who return their completed course selection forms and waiver forms first, will have priority.

A Message for Parents of Eighth Graders

Dear Parents of Grade Eight Students:

Greetings from the faculty, staff and administration of Hull High School.  As your student’s years at the Memorial Middle School draw to a close, it is time to start planning for his/her first year at Hull High School.  On April 9th, the Hull School Committee approved our 2012-2013 Program of Studies, allowing us to start the process of course selection for next year.  Over the next few months, we will work with you and your eighth-grader to develop the schedule that best meets their academic needs.

To start this process, I ask that you join me on Thursday April 26th at 7 PM in the Hull High School Exhibition Room.  The high school guidance counselors and I will present an overview of our academic program and the process used to select the courses that your student will take during their first year at Hull High School.  This meeting should last approximately 90 minutes and is designed for parents and guardians.  Your eighth-graders will see a similar presentation the next day, when they travel to Hull High School for “Step-up Day.”

Hull High School is an amazing educational community.  In 2010, we were named by Boston Magazine as one of the top 50 public schools in Massachusetts.  This past year, we were named to the College Board’s Advanced Placement Honor Roll, and were nominated by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a National Blue Ribbon School.  The academic, artistic and athletic accomplishments of our students are a source of great pride for our school and I am excited about your son/daughter joining our school.

I hope to see you on April 26th and I look forward to working with you and your student over the next 4 years.

Sincerely,

Michael F. Devine
Principal
Hull High School

Parent Survey - WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The Hull Public Schools has been selected by the MA DESE to have all parents participate in a survey about parent involvement.  Since the district had a low participation rate last spring, the DESE has reopened the parent survey until April 13, 2012 and we need your help by participating in the survey.  The entire process takes between three and ten minutes and the link to the survey is http://www.MAparentsurvey.com.  Thank you in advance for your assistance in providing this valuable information to us; information that will help us enhance parent involvement in our schools.  If you have any questions please contact Judy Kuehn, Director of Student Services @ 781-925-4400 ext.1121.
