Freshman Experience Letter from Principal Girouard McCann

August 17, 2017

Dear Freshmen:

Welcome to Hull High School!  As a member of the Class of 2021, you will find that this year will bring with it many new experiences.  We are hopeful you will grow both intellectually and socially while enjoying every aspect of life at a great “Blue Ribbon” high school!  Your first weeks at Hull High will be exciting even if they’re a little bit confusing.  Settle into your classes quickly and get the most from our staff and facilities.  Pay attention to all announcements about clubs and activities.  Ninth-grade students are most welcome and encouraged to join.  Get involved, work hard, and have a good time!

Dear Parents:
We welcome your son or daughter to Hull High School.  If this is your first experience as the parent of a high school student, you probably have some concerns and apprehensions.  Some of your questions may be answered below.  Others may be resolved by a phone call or personal contact.  The best prescription for a successful year for your student includes a large measure of interest combined with an open line of communication among parents, students and the school.

I know that the transition from middle school to high school is one that is filled with anxiety, nervousness and sometimes even outright fear.   It is with this in mind that the faculty and staff of Hull High School have created a program that will help to ease this transition.  This program is called The Freshman Experience and is designed to give every freshman the skills and supports that needed to achieve academic, emotional and social success at Hull High School. Listed below are a few key details that you should know before the first day of school.

Teachers
Hull High School is filled with outstanding teachers.  We have, however, “stacked the deck” for our freshmen and asked teachers with certain training and skills to teach all of the freshmen.  These teachers have all agreed to set and enforce strict academic and behavioral guidelines for your student while, at the same time, provide additional support to them and communication to you during this essential transition year.  The talented men and women who will be teaching your freshman are listed below.

English:  Mr. Marshall and Ms. Krzanowski
FR Writing:  Ms. Krzanowski
Public Speaking:  Ms. Connors
Geometry:  Ms. Harris
Algebra I and Algebra II Prep:  Ms. Mazzilli and Ms. Harris
World History:  Mr. Bell
Introductory Physics:  Ms. Lidington
Wellness:  Ms. Olivieri
Spanish I:  Ms. Wescott
Spanish II:  Mr. Eaton or Ms. Wescott
Academic Support:  Ms. Townsend
Art:  Ms. Davis
Music / Band:  Mr. Barkon
Technology:  Mr. DeLollis

Please feel free to contact via email any of these teachers at anytime.  The more information that you share with us about your child, the better we can meet his/her individual needs.  Each teacher’s email address is first initial then last name@town.hull.ma.us (i.e. kconnors@town.hull.ma.us).

Summer Reading
If your son or daughter has not completed the summer reading assignment, please do all you can to make sure it is done before the first day of school.  All freshmen are required to read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.  Students enrolled in Honors English 9 are required to read an additional book.  This summer reading assignment will be the first grade that your child earns at Hull High School.  The summer reading assignments are posted on the Hull High School blog (www.hullhighschool.blogspot.com).

Student Schedules
You and your student are able to access your child’s schedule using Aspen.  Just log on and click on the top tab that says Academics and then on the side tab that says Schedule.  If you have forgotten your Aspen log-in or password, please call Ms. Condon at 781-925-3000 x. 1106 and she can assist you.

Freshmen Open House
You and your child may still have questions about the start of high school and it is our goal to answer these questions as well as to relieve some of the anxiety associated with entering high school.  To accomplish these goals, we are holding our annual Freshmen Open House on Thursday, August 24.  All incoming freshmen and their parents/guardians are invited to stop by the high school between 6:00 and 7:30 PM to spend some time at HHS before the start of the year.  National Honor Society members will be available to help students find their lockers and classrooms and to give them advice about starting the year.  Our assistant principal Ms. Nosek, our athletic director Mr. Quatromoni, several teachers, and I will also be available to answer any questions that you or your student may have.   This is a casual evening with no set agenda, designed to let your son/daughter become better acclimated to his/her new school.   You may come anytime between 6:00 and 7:30 and stay for as long as you would like.

Home-School Communication
Although you will receive several letters from me over the course of the year, we rely heavily on social media to get information to parents and guardians.  It is important that you keep an eye on our blog (hullhighschool.blogspot.com) for news about upcoming events.  If you like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter, you will receive notifications each time something is posted on the blog.  In addition, our daily announcements are posted everyday on Aspen; when you sign in, you will see what Mrs. Nosek reads to the students each morning.

If you are interested in speaking with any of your student’s teachers, the best way to initiate that contact is through email.   My expectation for our teachers is that all emails are answered within one school day.  If this does not happen, please let me know and I can help facilitate the communication.

If you would like to speak with me or Mrs. Nosek, it is also best to email.  In addition, you can always leave a message for me or Mrs. Nosek with Ms. Condon who runs our main office.  She is a wonderful person and can either answer or get you answers to just about any question you may have.  To reach her you call 781-925-3000 and then hit the * key.  Please feel free to contact me at any time during the year.

This year will bring many new experiences for parents and freshmen.  The students will be exposed to some new freedoms and will be expected to assume new responsibilities.  There may be mistakes along the way, but these are normal, healthy, and even beneficial if learning follows.  I assure you that they will receive an outstanding education here at Hull High School and, with your support and their effort, will accomplish whatever goals they set for themselves.

We are proud of our staff and programs at Hull High School.  I personally look forward to working with you and all members of the Class of 2021 this year.  This is an exciting stage in their lives, and I am thrilled to be part of it.  I look forward to seeing you at the Freshmen Open House on August 24.

Sincerely,

Paula Girouard McCann
Principal, Hull High School

Welcome Letter from Principal Girouard McCann

August 17, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I am delighted to join the staff of Hull High School.  I have heard wonderful things about the students and the whole school community so it will be a pleasure to work with all of you this year.  I look forward to getting to know you and your students over the next few months.

Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Devine, Ms. Nosek, Mrs. Condon, and the other HHS staff members who work over the summer, we are all ready to welcome back the students in a matter of days.  Listed below are a few reminders and updates that are important for you to know as we start the 2017 – 2018 school year.

First Day of School
The first day of school for students is Tuesday, August 29.  Students should arrive by 7:25 AM and will start their day in advisory.  Lists of advisories will be posted in the main lobby.  Please be aware that all students will have school pictures taken on the first day of school.  More information regarding this will be mailed to you in the next week or so.

Schedules
You and your student have access to your child’s schedule through Aspen.  Just log on and click on the top tab that says Academics and then on the side tab that says Schedule.  If you have forgotten your Aspen log-in or password, please call Lori Condon at 781-925-3000 x. 1106 and she will assist you.

Summer Reading
Please remind your student to get his/her summer reading done!  The summer reading assignments are posted on our blog (http://hullhighschool.blogspot.com/) and the Hull Public Library has been very helpful in making sure that all students have the opportunity to complete the assignment.  As a former English teacher myself, I cannot stress enough the importance of completing summer reading.  This assignment will be the first grade your student earns this year so please encourage your student to complete the reading and assignment so that he/she can start the year with an A!

Staffing
I am thrilled that we have  new educators joining the Hull High School community this year.  They all have great experience, wonderful skills, and a strong desire to be a part of our dynamic learning community.

  • Jennifer Olivieri was at HHS last year as long-term substitute sub for one of our health/wellness teachers; this year she will become a permanent member of that department.
  • Stephanie Harris joins the Math Department as an algebra and geometry teacher.   She comes to HHS from Scituate High School.
  • Julie Krzanowski, the newest member of the English Department, will be teaching freshmen and sophomores.   She has prior experience at Lexington High School and East Hartford, CT
  • Leslie Townsend will be a long-term substitute for special education teacher Colby Bartro who is on maternity for the year.  Her prior experience was at Braintree High School.
  • Taylor Vieira, who was a paraprofessional at Satellite all of last year, will now be the special education teacher there.
  • Edward Cameron will be the special education teacher in our Team Based Learning Classroom.  Mr. Cameron was a paraprofessional at the high school and at Satellite all of last year.

There are still three paraprofessional positions which we in the process of filling as well as a new school psychologist.  These important positions will be filled in the next few days.

Fall Athletics
There are four major components to participation in fall athletics:
1.      Register
2.      Pay athletic user fee
3.      Attend parent, coach, student-athlete meeting
4.      Verify physical within 13 months
All of the information listed below is available with live links at http://piratesathletics.blogspot.com/
Fall sports registration is now available online.  Please register for cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, football or soccer at the following link:  http://fs24.formsite.com/HullPirates/form1/index.html
Athletic user fees can be paid at the following link:  https://unipaygold.unibank.com/Default.aspx?customerid=1039
The first sport fee of the school year is $250.  Football comes with an additional $25 charge to total $275.

Student-athletes and their families are STRONGLY encouraged to both register and pay online.  Taking care of these requirements before the season begins will help ensure that your child’s athletic experience is not delayed.   Please be sure that you have a copy of a physical valid within the last 13 months on file with the nurse.  The physical must be valid for the entire season of participation.  Please check this information; an expired physical will delay your child’s athletic experience.
Please call 781.925.3000 x. 1113 or email jquatromoni@town.hull.ma.us with any questions.

Open House
Please plan to join us on Wednesday, September 13 for Open House from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.  This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet teachers and hear about the course of study and teacher expectations; bring your son/daughter’s schedule.  We are going green!

Please check the blog for more important information both as we approach the beginning of the school year.  Enjoy the remainder of the summer and I look forward to meeting you in a few weeks.

Sincerely,

Paula Girouard McCann
