The American Legion Oratorical Committee, Department of Massachusetts, INC.

The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. The program has featured numerous politicians and prominent contestants over the years, including former president candidate Alan Keyes and CNN anchor Lou Dobbs.

High school students under age 20 are eligible. Competition begins at the post level and advances to a state competition. Legion department representatives certify one winner per state to the national contest, where department winners compete against each other in two speaking rounds. The contest caps off with a final round that decides the three top finishers.

Speaking subjects must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. Speeches are eight to 10 minutes long; three- to five-minute speeches on an assigned topic also are part of the contest.

DEADLINE:  December 31, 2014 - Student must be nominated by their HS principal

Student's help with Lion's Club Annual Holiday Dinner

Sunday December 12th was the Lion's Club Annual Holiday Dinner at the Nantasket Beach Resort. Students from the Memorial Middle School and Hull High School helped serve the senior citizens a delicious turkey dinner. Students served food, cleared tables and joined the seniors for a fun time set to holiday music. There was even a surprise visit from Kris Kringle himself!

The Hood Sportsmanship Scholarship® Program awards 18 New England high school student athletes with a $5,000 scholarship toward furthering their education at a 2- or 4-year accredited college or university.

For more than 160 years, Hood Milk has been committed to supporting families and communities across New England. Hood is proud to be able to give 18 student athletes an opportunity to win a $5,000 college scholarship.

MEFA College Financing Seminar

College Financing Seminar

Wednesday, December 10, 2014, 7pm
Hull High School Exhibition Room

MEFA’s College Financing Seminars

MEFA's free College Financing Seminars demystify the entire financial aid application process, breaking it down into straightforward concepts that every family can understand. We explain the nuts and bolts of how financial aid works and offer strategies for smoothly navigating the college financing process from beginning to end. Topics include:
  • Financial aid applications and eligibility
  • The types of financial aid available
  • How colleges determine how much aid to offer
  • Understanding award letters
Before you attend a seminar, we suggest downloading the following resources so you can start to build a foundation of knowledge and come prepared with questions:

Top 10 Financial Aid Application Tips

From finding paperwork to crunching numbers, filing out forms to juggling deadlines, the financial aid application process can seem complicated and intimidating. We help you keep it simple with these Ten Tips.

  1. Do not miss deadlines. Keep track of financial aid application requirements and deadlines with the Application Deadline Manager in MEFA’s Financial Aid Toolkit.

  2. If your taxes are not complete, you may estimate your income in order to meet the deadlines. Be as accurate as possible since your estimates will impact the initial award package you receive. You will be required to provide updated information later.

  3. Apply online if possible, to reduce errors and speed up the process.

  4. Remember, when the FAFSA asks for “your name” and “your Social Security Number” it is referring to the student, not the parent.

  5. When completing the FAFSA online, save your information as you go. This allows you to start your FAFSA application and complete it at another time if necessary.

  6. If your family has multiple children in college, separate applications must be completed for each of them.

  7. Apply for your Federal PIN. Dependent students and a parent both need their own PIN to sign the FAFSA electronically. You can apply when completing the FAFSA or apply now.

Champlain College Young Writers' Conference

Champlain College Young Writers' Conference, May 29-30

Intrepid Scribes,

You are once again cordially invited to attend a weekend of writing workshops, craft sessions, and open mic at the Champlain College Young Writers' Conference, May 29-30. Now in our fifteenth year, our doors are open to high school students who wish to share their passion for story, drama, and song with their writerly brothers and sisters—and with celebrated New England authors. We offer three days of readings, improv, Moth storytelling, poetry slams, literary jazz/blues fusion, and extended friendship on the hillside campus of Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont.

OUR 2015 KEYNOTE SPEAKER, AWARD-WINNING NOVELIST AND MEMOIRIST, DIANA ABU-JABER, is the author of Arabian JazzCrescentThe Language of BaklavaOrigin, and Birds of Paradise. Reviewers have called her prose “gorgeous” and “bitingly humorous,” and her stories and editorials have appeared in Ploughshares, the North American ReviewKenyon ReviewMs., SalonVogueThe New York Times, The Nation, the Washington Post, and elsewhere. A frequent contributor to NPR, Diana is the daughter of a Jordanian immigrant whose passion for food and folktales exerted a “powerful influence” over her work.

The postmark DEADLINE OF FEBRUARY 17 is fast approaching and the blue lights are flashing. If you have a tale to spin, or a story to share, please download an application (or cover letter & brochure) from our website: http://www.champlain.edu/write
