A letter from Mr. Devine regarding scholarships

Dear Friend of Hull High School,

“Although more Americans are getting help from scholarships and tax breaks, the net cost of college is eating up a higher share of the typical family's income in 2011, according to a report released Wednesday.   The sticker price of studying and living on campus at the average public university rose 5.4% for in-state students, or about $1,100, to $21,447 this fall, the College Board estimated.  The chief cause of that increase was a dramatic spike in tuition and fees at hundreds of public universities. Tuition at the average public university jumped 8.3% to $8,244The sticker price of living and studying for a year at a typical private college rose 4.3% to $42,224 this year.”    - http://money.cnn.com/2011/10/26/pf/college/college_tuition_cost/index.htm.

Tuition at public colleges is increasing by 8.3%.  Unfortunately, the amount of financial aid offered to our students has not increased at this same level.  In fact, many governmental scholarship and loan programs are giving substantially less to students, due to severe budget cuts.  Our students need your help more than ever.

I know that many of us are facing difficult financial situations in our own lives, but I am asking you to consider helping a 2014 Hull High School graduate earn a college degree.  This assistance can take several forms:

·         You can establish a scholarship in the name of loved one.  You can choose the recipient yourself or ask that the Hull High School faculty choose the recipient based on the criteria you chose.  This scholarship can be in any amount and can be endowed by you for as many years as you choose.
·         You can give a one-time financial award in any amount to a Hull High School student.  As with an established scholarship, you can choose the recipient yourself or ask that the Hull High School faculty choose the recipient based on the criteria you chose.
·         You can give any amount to the Hull High School General Scholarship Fund.  The Hull High School faculty will award several scholarships, the amount to be determined by the generosity of the Hull community.

If you have contributed before, on behalf of Hull High School, I give you my sincere thanks.  Through your generosity, you have made a significant difference in the life of a Hull High School graduate.  If you have not given before, I ask that you consider giving this year.

If you are choosing to establish a scholarship or give a one-time financial award, please contact Mrs. Lisa Dalton at Hull High School (ldalton@town.hull.ma.us or 781-925-3000 extension 1106)  before May 11, 2014.  If you would like to contribute to the general scholarship fund, you may send a check, made out to Hull High School (please put “Scholarship Fund” in the memo line), to Mrs. Lisa Dalton at Hull High School.

The generosity of the people of Hull, and the surrounding communities, continues to amaze me.  Your support has allowed so many Hull High School graduates to achieve their dreams of earning a college degree. Thank you for making a difference in their lives.

With sincere thanks,

Michael Devine

Hull High Student receiving National Cadet of the Year Award

Hull High School senior Sean Hauter has been selected to receive the national 2013 Naval Sea Cadet of the Year Award.

"We are very happy to report that one of our graduating cadets, Chief Petty Officer Sean Hauter of Squadron 7-Zulu (Quincy), has been selected to receive the national 2013 U.S. Naval Sea Cadet of the Year Award!

For service as set forth in the following CITATION:

For truly outstanding performance of duty in 2013 while serving as the Command
Chief Petty Officer of Squadron SEVEN-ZULU, Quincy, Massachusetts. In all
respects, CPO Hauter has led “from the deckplates”. Thanks in large part to his
dedication to planning and executing unit drills, Squadron SEVEN-ZULU and Training
Ship WASP have developed new hands-on training opportunities and achieved record
completion rates in cadet advanced trainings, correspondence courses and promotions.
CPO Hauter’s chain of command attributes much of the unit’s recent success to his
personal example, maturity and leadership. CPO Hauter has completed his own
advancement requirements in record time, thereby demonstrating leadership by
example. He was hand-picked for, and successfully completed, three NSCC recruit
training staff billets in California, serving as Training Officer and as Battalion
Command Chief. In addition, he participated in the U.S. Naval Academy’s 2013
Summer Seminar and was named Overall Outstanding Candidate, a rare award. He has
excelled at Hull High School, both academically and athletically. CPO Hauter’s consistent record of achievement both in the NSCC and the community reflect great credit upon himself,
and are in keeping with the highest traditions of New England Region 1-1, the U.S.
Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps.

Chief Hauter was competitively selected from over 12,000 cadets across the nation, and we are very proud of him and his fellow cadets! This annual award recognizes the Naval Sea Cadet who has excelled in all phases of NSCC training, and whose achievements mark him or her as the NSCC Cadet of the Year.

Matthew P. Landry
Lieutenant Commander, NSCC
Regional Director 1-1"

A Thank You note for Senior Class' donation

Prior to the Thanksgiving Rally, the student's of Hull High School participate in a "links contest."  Classes compete against each other in seeing which class can purchase the most links.  The links are then connected in the form of a paper chain and unveiled at the rally to announce the contest winner.

The winning class keeps 50% of the proceeds generated with the other 50% going to a charity of their choice.  This year, the senior class was victorious.  The seniors then selected the Batten Disease Support and Research Association as their charity of choice.

Please see below a note from the Executive Director of the charity.  Congratulations on a job well done by the class of 2014.

Sophomore Parent Presentation

The week after vacation the guidance counselors will be in Mr. MacKenzie's US History I classes, working with sophomore students on a career inventory and post-secondary planning project.  The students will be using Family Connection, which is a great college planning resource.  We'd like to share your student's results with you and introduce you to this amazing tool through an interactive presentation!

A Note from Mrs. Cocchi:
  • Geometry - Proving figures congruent, proving triangles congruent using SSS, SAS, ASA, and AAS.
  • H. Geometry - Midsegments of Triangles, Perpendicular and Angle Bisectors, and Medians and Altitudes.
  • Freshmen Math - Quadratic - Quadratic Equation, the discriminant and systems of linear and quadratic functions.  Getting ready to wrap up term 2 and take term 2 test.
  • Freshmen Math - Linear - FOIL, Factoring and getting ready to wrap up term 2 and take term 2 test.

A Note from Mrs. (Canniff) MacKenzie:
  • In Algebra I Linear Emphasis, the students are working on solving inequalities, working with sets (intersection and union), and will begin their study on functions.
  • In Algebra I Quadratic Emphasis, the students are working on solving quadratic equations and will begin their study on radical expressions.
  • GOOD NEWS!!!!  If you are absent or lose your worksheet, Aspen will not only include the homework assignment, but also a copy of the worksheet as an attachment!!
Don't forget the website for the book is www.pearsonsuccessnet.com.  Make sure you have your logon and password handy.  Also, make sure all students have either a spiral notebook or a section in their binder devoted exclusively to Algebra.  Students need to complete their homework assignments so that they become proficient at the various skills before they are tested.  Doing homework, reviewing the material and being organized are essential for a student to be successful in high school.

A Note from Mr. Fuller:
Mr. Fuller's English classes have just begun reading the classic novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.   During the month of January the English curriculum will be based around African-American literature, including this novel, the rhetorical language used in Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, Maya Angelou's Poetry, and a variety of additional literature.

 A Note from Mrs. Connors:
The freshmen writing classes for term 3 will begin the research paper writing process. Students will present their findings to the class using prezi. There is no mid-term because they are alternating term classes.  There will be a final exam at the end of term 3 and the end of term 4.

A Note from Ms. Desmond:
Wellness 9A is finishing up a PE unit at the end of the term and returning to Health at the start of term 3. Term 3 health units include substance use and abuse, sex education, and decision-making skills.
Wellness 9F will have the written final exam on Tuesday 1/21 and the physical final exam on Wednesday 1/22. In the case of absences we will continue the written exam on Thursday 1/23 and the physical exam on Friday 1/24.
Wellness 9C will meet for the first time on Monday 1/27. The students will report to room B132 and will need to bring a writing utensil.

A Note from Ms. Lidington:
In Introductory Physics, we'll be taking a midterm on Jan 22nd and 23rd that will be a major grade for Term 2.  In February we'll be learning about electricity and magnetism before vacation, and the kids will be able to experiment with circuits, the static electricity generator, and simple electric motors.  Students will also be starting their Term 3 projects on energy and energy transfers.

A Note from Mr. Bell:
In Mr.Bell's World History II classes students have been learning about European imperialism and its impact, both positive and negative, on the imperialized nations.  In addition to understanding the motives and effects of imperialization students studied primary sources to help them contrast the perspective of the Europeans with those they controlled.  Heading into vacation week we will begin our study of WWI which will include reading All Quiet on the Western Front.  Some of this classic war novel will be read independently over the break.

A Note from Mrs. Grosso:
The National Honor Society will be holding Homework Help after school on Wednesdays. Students can come to the library and get extra help with their work from upper classmen or just drop in to have some company while doing their work.

A Note from Ms. Wescott (Spanish I):
For the next few weeks in Spanish class, we will be learning to describe a house/apartment and families. We will create family trees and design our dream houses- with descriptions in Spanish. At the end of the unit, students will create a narrated slideshow describing either a house/apartment or family on the website VoiceThread. Also coming up will be a culture project with student's choice of topic which they will present and learn about a Hispanic person, place or tradition from each other!

A  Note from Mrs. Ivas:
Reading Strategies

Be an active reader:  Know the purpose for reading.  Let that guide you in determining important information;
Use title, graphics, sidebars to help make connections with text;
Read open response-type questions before reading to help determine purpose for reading;
Underline, highlight or take notes as you read;
Develop questions to help clarify confusing passages;
Write summary statements about material that you have read as often as you need;
Reread passages for clarification, comprehension checks;
Read for enjoyment.

A Note from Ms. Held:
All of Ms. Held's art classes are in the process of finishing up for the semester.  Their final exam is made up of three parts:  Project, Written Reflection/Course Evaluation and Oral Presentation of Project.  Projects are due this Friday, 1/17.  The last couple of days of the semester, students will be presenting their projects and cleaning/organizing the art room.  It has been a great semester and I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the students through their art!

Green Gecko Fundraiser

Hull High School Art Club members will be fundraising for the Green Gecko orphanage in Cambodia during all lunches this week.  Students are invited to come and check out the presentation table.  Art Club members participated in an Art Exchange project with the orphanage and decided they want to make a larger impact.   The groups goal is to raise $840.  This is enough money to buy each Green Gecko kid a pair of shoes which will allow them to go to school and help prevent the spread of disease.  For $2 we are raffling off Mr. Devine's parking spot for a week and for $5, you can wear a hat on Friday.  Whichever entices you more!  Or even just donating a dollar!!  Every little bit helps!

Here is their website to learn a bit more: http://www.greengeckoproject.org/ and see below for a few images of the Green gecko kids Happy Memory Art Exchange project with our Art Club!
