NEACAC ESSAY CONTEST
Win a scholarship for college!
The New England Association for
College Admission Counseling (NEACAC) announces its Annual Essay Contest
for high school juniors and seniors. NEACAC is an educational association of
more than 3,700 secondary school counselors, college and university admission
and financial aid counselors, and individuals who work with students in the
transition from high school to postsecondary education.
High school juniors and seniors from
NEACAC-member high schools in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire,
Rhode Island, and Vermont are invited to submit a 500-word essay on the
following topic:
Describe
a counselor, teacher, or coach who has had the greatest influence on your
decision to attend college. How has this individual impacted your
future? What will you do in college or beyond that will make a difference
in your community?
HOW TO ENTER
Fill out the application below and
upload your 500-word essay formatted as a Word document (.doc or .docx) or as a
pdf. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Have questions?

JUDGING
A panel of NEACAC members will judge
essays based on originality, creativity, focus, clarity, and structure.
Students from a broad range of academic preparation are encouraged to apply.
WINNING ENTRIES
Six winners—one from each of the six
New England states—will be awarded a $900 scholarship and receive
recognition at an awards ceremony during the Association’s Annual Meeting and
Conference and have their names published in the NEACAC Newsletter.

Submissions for the 2015 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards will begin on September 15, 2014. To get
started, visit our SIGN UP PAGE.
Be sure that you have your school zip code handy so that we can get
you the guidelines and deadline for your Local Program.

The Scholastic Awards look for work that demostrates technical skill, personal voice or vision, and
originality. After you have created your work, uploaded it to your Scholastic
Awards Account!

Stamp it and Send It!
After uploading your work, print your submission forms, have a parent/guardian and an educator sign
them, and then mail them to your Local Program. Mailing instructions can be
found on the submission
form or on your LOCAL PROGRAM’S WEBPAGE.
What else do I need to know?
Eligibility
Public, private, parochial, or home-school students in the US, Canada, or American schools abroad
enrolled in grades 7 – 12 are eligible to participate in the Awards.

Judging Criteria
Originality Work that breaks from convention, blurs the boundaries between genres, and challenges
notions of how a particular concept or emotion can be expressed.
Technical Skill Work that uses technique to advance an original perspective or a personal vision or voice,
and show skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and
innovative.
Personal Vision or Voice Work with an authentic and unique point of view and style.
Blind Judging
The Scholastic Awards are adjudicated without knowledge of the artists/writers identity. Please make sure
that your submission does not contain any personal information.
Freedom of Expression
Young artists and writers are free to explore any and all topics. There are no pre-defined prompts and no
work is ever disqualified from the Scholastic Awards because of the nature of
its content.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarships and Awards
Eligibility for Scholarships
To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Scholarship
Programs, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Be enrolled full-time as a high school senior in
the United States, progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer of
2015 with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall
following graduation
·
Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and
complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private
institution in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year
institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)
·
Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or
lower adjusted gross family income is required)
·
Be involved in co-curricular and community
service activities
·
Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming
adversity
·
Maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of
2.0
·
Be a United States citizen

2015 Young Entrepreneur Awards
What are the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards? The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards are non-renewable
scholarships created to recognize young people who have demonstrated
entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. The scholarships are valued between
$1,000 and $10,000. The NFIB Young Entrepreneur program was established to
raise awareness among the nation’s youth of the critical role that private
enterprise and entrepreneurship play in the building of America.
What are the details of the
award?
- The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards are $1,000.
- Three NFIB National Young Entrepreneur Awards will be issued for $5,000.
- One NFIB Dan Danner Leadership Award will be issued for $15,000.
- One NFIB Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be issued for $15,000.
- All awards must be used in the 2015-2016 academic year.
- The scholarships can be applied to tuition and fees required by your postsecondary school.
- Funds must be used for full-time enrollment at accredited, nonprofit two or four-year colleges, universities, vocational or technical schools in the United States.
Who is eligible to receive
the awards? NFIB Young Entrepreneur
Awards are open to any graduating high school senior who owns and operates
his/her own small business. Additionally, the student must enter their freshman
year at an accredited two- or four-year university, college or
vocational/technical institute during the Fall 2015. Children of NFIB members
are eligible to win awards.
How do students apply for
the Young Entrepreneur Awards? Students
are encouraged to apply online at www.NFIB.com/YEA beginning October 1, 2014,
and may apply until December 18, 2014.
Who Can Enter
High school juniors and seniors for the 2014–2015 school year
who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to participate.
Word Length
Students must submit an essay between 800 and 1,000 words on the
provided topic below.
Deadline
FIRE must receive all entries by January 1, 2015. Winners will
be announced January 31, 2015.
Prizes
One $10,000 first prize, one $5,000 second prize, and three
$1,000 runner-up prizes will be awarded for the best essays.

Four $500 winners will be chosen from the remaining entrants in
a drawing.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
The Jack
Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program is an undergraduate
scholarship program available to high-achieving high school seniors with
financial need who seek to attend and graduate from the nation's best four-year
colleges and universities. Selected from a nationwide pool of applicants, up to
40 students will become Jack Kent Cooke Scholars and have access to funding for
up to four years for undergraduate studies.
Each award is intended
to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses – including
tuition, living expenses, books and required fees. Awards vary by individual,
based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships he or she
may receive.
This highly
competitive scholarship includes:
Up to $40,000 per year to attend a four-year accredited undergraduate school
Ability to pursue any area of study
Personal advising about selecting a college and navigating financial aid
Multifaceted advising about how to transition to college and maximize the college student experience
Selection Criteria
Jack Kent Cooke
Foundation College Scholars are selected based on exceptional academic ability
and achievement, financial need, persistence, a desire to help others, and
leadership..
Selection Process
A rigorous application
review includes analysis of grades, standardized test scores, participation in
available advanced courses, student essays, letters of recommendation, and
family finances. Each year 30-40 students will be selected into the
program.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
At a minimum,
applicants must:
· Plan to graduate from
a US high school in spring 2015
·
Intend to enroll in an
accredited four-year college beginning in fall 2015
·
Earn a cumulative
unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above
·
Receive standardized
test scores in the top 15%: SAT combined critical reading and math score of
1200 or above and/or ACT composite score of 26 or above
·
Demonstrate
significant unmet financial need. We will consider applicants with family
income up to $95,000. However, we anticipate that a majority of scholarship
