HHS Chosen for BioTeach Take Out Training and Equipment Program

On Wednesday, Mr. Donohue's Advanced Placement Biology class was visited by Maggie Keeler from the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation.  Hull High School was chosen as a pilot school for the The BioTeach Take Out Training and Equipment (TOTE) program, which is run through the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation.

Ms. Keeler brought in specialized equipment, so that students in the class could conduct a lab to determine ampicillin resistance in an unknown bacterial strain.  Students practiced micropipetting techniques, used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) equipment to amplify DNA samples, and separated DNA fragments using gel electrophoresis.

Jobs in the Biotech industry in Massachusetts industry are growing at just over 10% per year, and The Mass Biotechnology Education Foundation works to generate interest in the life sciences and biotech careers by providing high quality, hands-on lab experiences for students, and professional development for classroom teachers.

World War II Field Trip

In March, the juniors class had a great time exploring the collection of over 7,000 authentic WWII artifacts at the Museum of World War II. Some stand-outs included the many rifles and other weapons the students were able to handle, air force pilot gear and life boat, prisoners' belongings from Nazi concentration camps, propaganda posters, spy gear, some of Hitler's personal belongings, parachutes from D-Day, ceremonial kamikaze gifts, ringing the submarine bell and sounding the London air raid siren, and of course the Sherman tank!

A big 'Thank You' to the Hull PTO and Hull Boosters Club for helping to fund this great experience.

South Shore League Scholar Athlete Award Winners

On Wednesday, May 10, the South Shore League principals and athletic directors hosted the 7th Annual League Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at Souther's Marsh in Plymouth.  The twenty student-athletes honored that evening were selected by the administration of their respective schools. These students represent the top student-athletes in the South Shore League based on academics, athletic participation, sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship. They have all successfully balanced a
demanding academic schedule with participation in athletics and co-curricular
activities. Nomination for this award shows four years of dedication and commitment.

Congratulations to Hull's winners:  Dylan Iorio and Caitlin Ryan.

Hull High School Concert Band Earns GOLD!

GOOOOOOOOOOLD!

Congratulations to the Hull High School Concert Band for earning a Gold Medal rating based on a set of National Standards for Performance at last weekends World Strides OnStage Music Festival in Washington D.C.!  This was their first music festival under the direction of Ian Barkon and Hull's return to the field of music competition.  Along with 38 of the members, chaperones Mr. St. George (MS Band/Chorus/Music Teacher), Mr. Donohue (HS Science Teacher), and Mrs. Preston (Parent) rode down to D.C. on Friday, April 28th for some sightseeing and the adjudication.  Before they returned on Sunday, April 30th, the Band and their director experienced a team bonding beyond anything they've already done.  Pictures are available on Instagram at #hhspiratesplaydc and the performance, courtesy of Mrs. Proude, is on Facebook at Hull High School Music Department.  Join us for our free Spring Concert and Awards night on MAY 25, 7 PM, in the Joseph C. Doniger Auditorium.
