PSAT Results Are In!

10th and 11th grade students will receive a copy of their PSAT results in the mail this week.  Included is a handout that explains how to interpret the score card.  The guidance department will also review the results with sophomore students in February and individually with juniors as they have their spring college meetings.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please see your counselor!

Here is a link to a video provided by the College Board that will further explain your score report and give you ideas on how to study for the SATs!

Test Date:  March 8th;  Registration Deadline:  February 7th
Test Date:  May 3rd;  Registration Deadline:  April 4th

The Green Gecko Project

Green Gecko... where kids can be kids and dreams can come true

The Green Gecko Project supports 70 children who previously lived and begged on the streets of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Green Gecko provides security, education, love and opportunities to these children through their formative years and into their adult lives, empowering them to achieve their full potential. The project also supports the children's families and the broader community through long term health, education and training initiatives.

QUOTES FROM THE GECKO KIDS
"Sometimes when our parents had no money, they would get angry and hit us to make us beg more. We felt sad and tired, sometimes we fell asleep on the streets, many times we wanted to cry."
"We go to Cambodian school, and English classes too. We also have extra lessons at Gecko to find out more about the world we live in, and ourselves. We learn to solve problems with logic, and express ourselves through art and dance."
"For me, I dream to have my own NGO, so I can help other beggar children change their lives… just like me. For the first time, I feel excited about my life. My name is Kim Suan, I'm a Green Gecko kid and this is my story."
"At Green Gecko, now we are like one big family living together. We get lots of food, care and love."

ART TO CONNECT
All around, politics and history may divide us, but art unites. Forever will the artist reach into the future and fetch our collective tomorrows. Art knows no borders, it is everywhere we exist, it always was and always will be."      - From: By Art We Live
ART EXCHANGE PROJECT BETWEEN HULL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND GREEN GECKO
ILLUSTRATE YOUR HAPPIEST MEMORY: Hull High School art club members joined up with PHI and TALK participants for this special project.  Thirteen members from the HHS clubs and from the Green Gecko Project, set out to choose their happiest memory to illustrate. HHS students felt that focusing on a happy memory would be a positive experience for all.  After the artwork was completed, it was then swapped and the students wrote a small paragraph, telling the story of what they thought the artwork/memory is actually about. The original artist then wrote what the memory actually was; and these were revealed after the interpretation was made.

WHAT’S NEXT….
How can we take this a step further?

HHS students were so touched by our connection to the Gecko kids that we decided we want to take our project a step further.  Green Gecko Project is a non-profit organization that relies solely on donations to keep it alive.  So, we have decided that we want to support their mission by creating a fundraiser of our own.  Our goal is to raise $840.

WHY $840 you ask?  At $12.00 per pair, $840 dollars would help pay for a pair of shoes for all 70 of the Green Gecko children.

NEW SHOES ARE VERY IMPORTANT!

Wearing a new pair of shoes is about much more than fashion for children in Cambodia. Many kids grow up barefoot, putting them at risk of cuts, scrapes and soil-transmitted diseases. Without shoes, children are also not allowed to go to school. Your generous gift will buy a pair of shoes for a Gecko kid, protecting their growing feet and making sure they step out in style, towards a brighter future!    Stay tuned to help us meet our goal!!!

Pre-College Programs for High School Students

Many colleges and universities offer pre-college programs for high school students.  Most of these programs take place over the summer and the students live on campus, eat in the dining halls, and work with college students and professors.  Programs like this give students a great idea about what college life is like.  The best way to find these programs is to do a Google search along the lines of: "Pre-college programs at Name of University.  You should be linked directly to the page.

While these programs are usually pretty expensive, there is often financial aid available to help with the cost.  Below are some links to programs in the Boston area!

Emerson College - great programs for film/TV/Writing:  http://www.emerson.edu/academics/professional-studies/programs-high-school-students

Harvard - http://www.emerson.edu/academics/professional-studies/programs-high-school-students

University of Massachusetts, Amherst - http://www.summerfuel.com/pre_college/umass_Amherst

Boston College - http://www.bc.edu/content/bc/schools/summer/bce.html

Northeastern - http://www.cps.neu.edu/college-summer-programs/

Massachusetts Institute of Technology - this site also links you to other math/science based programs at other institutions:  http://mitadmissions.org/apply/prepare/summer

Boston University - http://www.bu.edu/mysummer/

Successfully completing these programs does not guarantee admission to the college/university (or even give the student a significant advantage in the application process), however, they do look great on a resume!  Some of the programs even offer college credit!
